Beyond the blood – stained battlefields of Balintawak was a forest, home to a woman of 84 who gave life and body to what would otherwise have been just another empty term: moral support. Bonifacio and his men called her Tandang Sora.

As they came to know the touch of her hand and the comfort of her home, she became Mother to them. Their affinity was their love –for country.

The forest where Tandang Sora gave Bonifacio and his men refuge and healing became the latter’s second home. No one knocked at Tandang Sora’s door who was not invited in. To the hungry she offered the bounty of her table.  To the sick and the wounded she offered the healing touch of her hand. The weary mind and body she offered the solace of her home.

Today this site is not a forest anymore but a refuge still. It is now Himlayang Pilipino – The Filipino’s resting place. Here the legends and myths of our people and the history of our lands have been given concrete form in murals and sculptures.

It is a proper tribute to our heroes of 1896, whether celebrated or obscure, that this site where once they experienced respite from battle is now the final resting place of the very people for whom they fought and gave up their lives.

Himlayang Pilipino pays homage to the men and women of virtue and valor who rendered sweat and blood for their land and their people.

Himlayang Pilipino holds high their memory in stone and bronze in the hope that we who have come after them and those who will come after us may give life to their ideals and continue to strive for the realization of the visions that dwelt in their minds and hearts.
